Maria Guerra Lapacek was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Revenue by Secretary Peter Barca in August 2022. She has served the department since April 2019 when she was appointed Assistant Deputy Secretary.
Deputy Secretary Guerra Lapacek held numerous high-level leadership positions in her career. Most recently, she was the Director of the Mayor's Office of Legislative Counsel and Government Affairs in the City of Chicago. She also served as Commissioner of the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, Deputy Director of the Office of the Chief Financial Officer and Deputy Budget Director of the Office of Budget and Management.
Prior to that, she worked in communications and media serving as a press secretary for California Congressman Sam Farr and as a news producer for Telemundo, PBS, and WTTW Channel 11. She was also a law clerk in the private sector for Kraft Foods.
Deputy Secretary Guerra Lapacek has a bachelor's degree in Communication from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. Additionally, she holds a master's degree in Business Administration and a law degree, both from DePaul University in Chicago.
She lives in Poynette with her husband Shaun and two daughters.
